Internal vs External LOCUS OF CONTROL and the impact on lives!

Internal locus of control refers to the belief or perception that one's actions, decisions, and behavior have a direct impact on the outcomes of their life. People with a high degree of internal locus of control tend to attribute outcomes of their actions to factors under their own control rather than to external circumstances.

Benefits of internal locus of control include:

1. Increased self-motivation and determination: People with a high internal locus of control tend to be more motivated and determined because they understand that their efforts directly influence their outcomes.

2. Higher stress tolerance: They can better handle stress as they believe they can positively change or manage situations.

3. Greater personal satisfaction: They often derive high levels of satisfaction from their accomplishments as these are seen as results of their individual efforts.

However, there are also potential disadvantages:

1. Excessive self-criticism: Since they attribute successes and failures to their own actions, they might indulge in harsh self-criticism when things go wrong.

2. Burnout: They might overwork themselves in an effort to control all outcomes, potentially leading to burnout.

3. Blaming oneself for uncontrollable events: They may tend to blame themselves for outcomes beyond their control, leading to unnecessary guilt and stress.

The opposite of an internal locus of control is an external locus of control. People with a high degree of external locus of control tend to believe that external circumstances, luck, or other people are the main influences on their life's events.

Results from an external locus of control can include:

1. Lower stress levels: Since these individuals attribute outcomes to external factors, they often feel less personal stress.

2. Reduced risk of burnout: They don't feel the need to control everything, which can lead to a more relaxed attitude towards work and life.

On the downside:

1. They may feel powerless: As they perceive events to be out of their control, they can feel helpless and unable to change their circumstances.

2. Lack of motivation: They may have little personal drive to achieve goals because they think their efforts won't greatly affect outcomes.

3. Blaming others: They might blame others or circumstances for their mistakes, which can lead to conflicts and accountability avoidance.
