SENECA’S teachings of being our best selves.

BE the person you are destined to BE

Seneca, a Stoic philosopher, philosophies provide several insights on existence or 'being', the closest relevant concept to 'BE'.

Here are a few of his teachings that might relate to 'being':

Ø  Wisdom and Virtue are Supreme.

Seneca suggested that the highest human function is to live according to reason. He believed that wisdom and virtue were the most desirable attributes.

Ø  Value of Time and Presence

He supported the idea of understanding the worth of time and being present in the current moment. Given that our existence is limited, 'being' in Seneca's view therefore involves fully engaging with our life.

Ø  Resilience in the face of adversity

Being, in Seneca's understanding, also involves resilience. He suggested that adversity is what you are born for. Pain, he claimed, is never unbearable or unending, so you can overcome it.

Ø  Pursuit of a simple life

Seneca regularly emphasized the values of a simple life. He warned against the pursuit of wealth and social status, as these distractions prevent us from truly 'being' and living in accordance with nature and reason.

Ø  Emotional Control

Seneca suggested that intervening between an event and our response to it gives us the power to choose our response (to 'be' calm, even in adversity). He also wrote frequently about anger and its destructive impact.

Remember these interpretations link Seneca's teachings to a modern understanding of the concept of 'being'.
