SELF UNDERSTANDING through the ICEBERG model

The iceberg model is a popular tool that is used in psychology and various other fields to understand complex systems, situations, and behaviours, including self-understanding and awareness.

The model suggests that like an iceberg, many aspects of an individual or a system are not immediately visible; they're beneath the surface.

Here's how one can apply the iceberg model for self-understanding:

Ø  The Tip of the Iceberg: Our Observable Behaviour

This sits above the water line and it's what you can see. This includes behaviours, actions, and what you say or do. The interpretation from others about us often depends on this visible part. To understand yourself better, you might want to pay attention to your actions and what they might say about you.

Ø  Below the Surface: Our Thoughts and Feelings

These are things that others cannot see, but indirectly affect the visible part. It includes your thoughts, feelings, emotions, values etc. Monitoring our own thoughts, negative self-talk, and emotional patterns can allow us a deeper insight into our 'below-the-surface' aspect.

Ø  Below the Thoughts and Feelings - Our Values, Beliefs, and Assumptions

Deeper down the iceberg, our values, beliefs, and assumptions rest. This is the backbone of our attitudes and behaviours above. By uncovering and understanding these components, we can fundamentally understand who we are and why we do what we do.

Ø  The Base of the Iceberg - Our Unconscious Mind

The largest part of the iceberg lies beneath the water's surface unseen, which represents our unconscious mind, including suppressed memories, primal instincts, automatic reactions etc. This is the deep, core part of self that is harder to reach, accept and understand. But through methods like therapy, self-reflection, or meditation one could start accessing this deeper level.

Understanding oneself through the iceberg model involves self-reflection, introspection, and often an ability to be brutally honest with oneself. It's not about judgment, but about gaining insight into one's thoughts, feelings, and behaviours to ultimately build a more cohesive, authentic self-understanding.
